Over the past several years, we have worked with numerous clients on on-going print projects, limited edition runs, and exhibitions.
We've evolved a process unique in Australia in quality, convenience and cost terms.
This
service enables artists or photographers to dramatically reduce the
work and expense involved in producing limited edition prints runs,
while at the same time improving both quality and consistency!Jump to:
How the process works - in a nutshell
Simply
put - we safely store the digital files here for you (of course
copyright remains yours at all times) and print short run batches of
images to order, as and when you need them. Each
image is a perfect reproduction of the last. This can save you
thousands of dollars since you no longer need to speculatively print
the entire run of limited edition prints before you sell them!
How the process works - in detail
- First, you must produce or obtain high quality digital files of your artworks.
If they're not originally digital artworks, we suggest you have them
professionally photographed onto medium or large format film (or
scanned with a suitable scanner). We are putting together a list of
Photographers and organisations offering services in the area of art
reproduction, so if you are looking for a recommendation, please get in touch. If you are a photographer (or scanner) with proven expertise in the area of artwork reproductions, please also get in touch and we can add you to our list.
If your photographer shoots film, we can then help you with the film
scanning and retouching side of things, to convert the film into big,
beautiful digital files suitable for high quality reproduction.
We can of course also help you with any general retouching work required.
- Once you have high quality digital files, you're well on your way. You bring the files to us,
and we copy them to our RAID-5 storage system. This system is fault
tolerant (i.e. highly reliable) and if nothing else this means you have
a high quality digital backup of your files in a separate geographic
location (of course you should keep your own originals as well, ideally
burned to archival media).
- We now make an A4 proof print on the media of your choice (see notes on media selection below, and on print prices)
The A4 proof print needs to be approved by you,
and of course we can edit the file for accuracy (or effect) if required
(retouching of this type is $60/hour if required, most images take only
a few minutes if the original files are in good shape).
- Once we are all happy
we can make the prints in just the way you want, we safely store your
digital files, and all the settings and details associated with the
making of these prints to your specifications.
There is no limit on the number of images or length of storage time.
- Prints are now made in small batches to order, only as you actually need them (minimum of 5 prints of the same size if using A4/A3 sizes, no minimum order on the larger sizes)
The prints can be picked up, mailed carefully packaged in a tube to
you, or even directly to your customers (although this does not give
you the opportunity to sign or number your prints, of course).
To have prints made, you simply get in touch and provide clear instructions, along with payment. Costs are detailed below, and turn-around time is officially quoted as 2-3 days but 95% of jobs are done within 24 hours.
Media Selection
Our Standard Media Types
This page details all our exquisite media options. We have printed samples here of all our media and you are very welcome to come in to have a look. Just give us a ring to make an appointment.
Other media options and BYO Media
We
can work with you to choose other types of media from our large
selection of samples (you simply buy a box of the media from us, and
then leave it with us for your prints), or you can supply your own
inkjet printable media if you prefer/need an exact paper match to an
original paper type we don't supply.
(N.B. All media used must be inkjet coated
as uncoated papers can damage the printers, and deckled edges are not
allowed - however the sheets can be deckled after printing, see below).
On Deckled Edges
Nothing
will kill a printer quicker than deckled edges, so unfortunately we
can't let you use paper with deckled edges. However, you can purchase
the excellent dual edge ripper to do your own deckling after the printing. The result is very good and is remarkably close to a true deckled edge.
Print sizes available
We
offer sheet prints in standard sizes - A4 (297 by 210 mm, 11.7 by 8.5
inches), A3 and A3+ (483 by 329mm, 19 by 13 inches). Note that about half
an inch of white space must be left around the edges on sheet prints
(i.e. full bleed printing is not possible).
Beyond these
sizes, we also offer roll prints. These are printed on paper from a
roll that is either 24 inches wide (61.0 cm) or 44 inches wide (111.7
cm), and prints can be from 10 inches up to 100 inches or more in
length. Pricing is in 5 inch increments, i.e. 24 by 10" or 24 by 15" or
44 by 20" etc etc.
The physical width of the roll is
either 24 or 44 inches, so this size limit is fixed and you must
remember that any required white space will have to fit within the 24
or 44 inches. We can print the roll prints full bleed but there may be
some final trimming required of a millimetre or two along the edges as
the printing is not millimetre perfect on the edges.
