Dear Jeremy,

Thank you for your welcome and all of your informative information which I have seriously studied . Sometimes in the digital world we consider our thinking and limited expertise is the right and proper way to achieve the best results. But when we broaden our horizons a bit we realise we have only scratched the surface. I certainly realise I am not in any way the proverbial expert and always open to improve the limited knowledge I have so far gained.
I am 75 yrs young and only turned a computer on about 12yrs ago after a good son gave me a clapped out one and I was hooked. A few years at Tafe and I learnt how & when to turn one off. I’ll cut a long story short; I am a photographer of some sorts who lives up in the Blue Mountains of N.S.W.
I now photograph our beautiful mountain scenery using a Nikon D50 camera with a Tamron 300mm lens; and have now progressed to print them out on a canon IPf 6100 24” printer producing various sized prints up to 1800mm x 500mm on archival matt and fine art paper which I and others consider to be Giclee quality.
These I frame and display and sell at various local exhibitions and craft displays. (This has suffered somewhat in the last 12mnths due to our financial downturn, but if you are not out there on display you will never sell) To date these activities have paid for every piece of digital equipment I own- computers, scanner, printers, camera’s and all the ancillary bits and pieces that seem to breed with these activities. After reading and following your notes I have upgraded my video card and memory.
My next investment is to procure a decent affordable photographic quality monitor. I am giving serious consideration to a NEC P221W Multisync which is within my present budget range.
So I won’t ramble on, I will however thank you again for your invaluable notes and advice which I will continue to peruse and undoubtedly learn a lot more about the digital world of Photographic creativity!

You don’t realise how much time and money you have saved me.

The problem with the printer was a driver one.

There were a couple of different versions of drivers stuck in different places on client PC’s and the server.

I have just spent the last couple of hours removing all trace of every Epson driver and started from scratch and everything works PERFECTLY.

Perfect borderless prints.

Oh and the monitor isn’t too bad either.

I;m a  retired photographer enthralled by the scope ,control and quality digital imagery has given to today's photographers.

Thanks for your mail Jeremy, I have started digesting the Digital Fine Print online book and will be re-reading, and referring to it, for guidance in the coming weeks. The information is a real eye opener for me and I look forward to learning more.  We sent Kylie and email order on Friday for an Eizo monitor and Eye 1 calibrator together with profile package to get things rolling. My printing to date has been fairly low key as my main activities for the last 20 years have been in stock photography, and now its all digital  I find my images were suffering due poor calibration on an old monitor (Oh for the good ol days of Velvia!).

Just wanted to say a big thanks for your fantastic book notes on the
Digital Fine Print.
I ventured into photography in the late 70's first learning on the job
in NZ and later on the job and at TAFE in Sydney - 13 fantastic years.
Thats a long time ago - obviously way before digital. For many wrong
reasons long ago I stopped taking photos, then 2 years ago I bought
a digital camera. Having studied photography and understanding things
like sensitometry and the dark room, I was suddenly excited.
Things that had taken me days to achieve in the dark room could be done
via photoshop in the matter of minutes. I just needed to learn
how to do it! Finding the data was proving disheartening. Then I
found a link to your site. This is what I needed - fantastically
written
(typo's easily excused).

Wow thanks - I have learnt soo much.
Now, when I first started working in the field, I worked with a guy who
taught me the in's and out's of film/paper types and we would make
our own developers from scratch to achieve a desired product. We
imported unusual papers from germany - some of them were amazing.
The intense velvet blacks.. and tonal range to die for, beautiful paper
surfaces. I thought this was history - but after reading your data I
have
the idea that I'm wrong.

I really want to learn about the papers available today - I would love
to be able to control the whole process (as I once did) and would love
to do a course where you were able to try the various types of papers
available and see and feel the results. Maybe I'm alone in this and
everyone else is up to speed - but I haven't been able to find this
avenue of learning in Sydney. I'm not asking you for a solution, it's
just been
a huge question of mine for the past couple of years.

Yes, I use Pixel
Perfect who do produce great results - even better ones for me since
(thanks to your advise) I bought a calibrator!
Anyway, I'm a big fan and I tell all my photography friends of about
your generosity in providing such valuable knowledge.

Great work on the website, the menus all work on FireFox 2.0.0.3 and MacOS X 10.4.9, and the Digital Fine Print book is awesome.

But what happened in the wavelength section of light, chapter 2? The scale is in reverse! UV should be shortest at around 380nm - 400nm and IR the longest at 700nm. What do you think?

Really, I meant to email you ages ago but have got caught up with the new job and playing around with the knowledge and skills I gained from the training I day I spent with you a couple of weeks ago. The training was really useful in that it provided me with the underpinning theoretical understanding I needed, as well as some basic skills, to start to explore colour management in a more sophisticated way than I had been doing before. I now have a much better grasp of colour and contrast, and am getting much better results out the printer, even without the profiles being written. As a check, I’ve applied automatic functions (eg auto colour, levels etc) and haven’t liked the results anywhere near as much as what I can produce myself.

Phoned you yesterday re difficulty with applying two profiles through CS3.  Have updated Photoshop and the profiles now work perfectly!

(John F ran into a known issue with out of date CS3 installations - for a couple months there ICC profiles were broken. The symptomes were near-black soft proofs and prints. If you are experiencing this, make sure you update your copy of CS3 to the latest and the problem will go away!)

Hi Jeremy,
Wow, what a difference.
The canned Canson vs the Custom profile is very noticeable in the soft proofing.
With the Ilford canned vs the Custom profile, I struggled to find a difference at first.  On the portrait I opened the only difference I noticed was that the highlight is a little more blown out on the Custom profile, which matches what happens on my printer.
It wasn't till I opened a multicolour image that the difference became very noticeable.
While I've only soft proofed at this time, both profiles look amazing, and I'm looking forward to doing a couple of prints on the weekend.

Thank you very much for the Custom ICC profile. The service was fantastic and the timely response to my email question was great.

Now I have a profile is clearly superior to the paper manufacturer’s own profile – better greens and magentas in particular. This will certainly save me far more than the profile’s cost in wasted paper and ink in trying to get the print to match what I see on the monitor. Not to mention the time it saves me too!

Dear Jeremy,

thank you for taking the time to answer over the phone and by email what to you must be somewhat inane questions. I have now installed the two printer profiles you sent me and recalibrated the monitor at a brighter level. The results as as close to perfect as I would wish. Your 'Using ICC Output Profiles' pdf file was uncommonly useful and detail given to a fault. If this had been written by the usual computer geek it would have been unintelligible to the tyro user.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I gave the new profiles a quick go last night using the photodisc test image, and am most pleased by the results of the PhotoSatin profile !
That paper is so white, it's practically blue, but skin tones look a lot more natural now ! I'll be happy to use that paper for family snaps/portraits now !

And you managed to reduce the "reddish" cast I had the portfolio rag too :)

I'll admit the Gold Fiber Silk canned profile was pretty good to start off with, but now it seems a bit richer, and more robust. Gave it that punch it really needed.

Can't wait to receive the scans now !

those through. After FINALLY getting my two year old to bed, I have
just printed my first photo using one of the profiles through
Lightroom, which Jeremy recommended. And I have to say, after
printing about a dozen off last night trying to get the correct tones
etc, this is the closest to what I am looking at on the monitor...
first go! I still have a lot to learn but hopefully I won't be
wasting too much paper now that I have the profiles.

WOW, I have struggled with my printing for 10 years. Went through the learning process with "Adobe calibration software" and eventually the inconsistancies got to me and I bought a Spyder2 Suite. I am happy with it's performance but had some doubts when I read your notes. My Epson 2400 continued to produce darker, than the monitor, prints even with monitor calibration. It was when I had to print a simple cover for a CD I knew that my printer was way out of calibration. I had read the information on your website sometime ago and bookmarked it. After revisiting the site I printed a target and sent it off to you. The rest is history as they say, $75 well spent. I'm looking forward to buying an EIZO monitor from you later this year. Many thanks for your straight forward easy to follow instructions and the honest informative approach to system calibration.

What a fantastic result you've achieved for us! It's lifted muddy
greenish output to a very close match to the screen display, and it's
even hard to distinguish the quality of colour output on bond vs. coated
paper. (And this is just for unexciting satellite imagery.)

downloaded the Ilford profiles for a Canon 4000 printer. I'm already
disappointed.....

Results from the hp b9180, with it's pigment inks, have been great,
particularly on photo rag where printed images are "real". The pigment
inks are laid down almost as in a painterly image and edges between
light and dark are superb - never thought I'd become a great fan of

Finally, did some prints [with an Image Science Profile]
for Mark Galer's class, the accuracy of the
profile+printer+monitor calibration was nothing short of staggering
for me. I'm producing injet prints that look
like no inkjet prints I've made before! For the first time, my prints
look *exactly* like what's on my screen (at least to my untrained

Thanks for that.

Used the Eye-one unit over the weekend, it was really easy
to use, and worked straight out of the box. The colors (on both
the CRT and the laptop) are significantly different (much warmer, as
expected) than prior to calibration.

The ICC profile installed and went as per instructions on your web-page.
Will try printing with it later.

Unbelievable!!! I have just printed out a sunset photo on the
Hahnemuhle paper, and what I had on the screen is what I got on the
paper. Fantastic. I printed out the same image using
the <ANOTHER SERVICE> profile, and to be blunt it is "rs"!! It
looks dark and muddy. Can't wait to get the profiles from
you. Finally, I might be getting what I expect. 11 out of 10 for you.

printed the target image and have enclosed it with the new Canson target
images. See what you think. I also printed out a picture I took at my son's
birthday and compared to a print I had done with the previous profile and

I have been preparing a display of some of my photography for a
conference that's happening at my church in the coming weeks (details

So I've been using the printer profile for the last couple of weeks now,
and I'm very pleased with the results. I can see the difference in the
prints prior to and after using your profile, and I'm getting excellent
results.

I'm still getting used to the difference in colour gamut & contrast
between the screen & the print but I'm sure I'll acclimatise to this
difference after a little while longer. I'm using the soft proofing
technique you describe on your website, which is a good tool for viewing
the print results prior to producing the actual print too.

So thanks to you both - I've been very happy with the results from the
profile you created for me.

The profile is working perfectly. I am soft proofing in Photoshop and the final print is pretty well spot on. Colours are OK, but the print appears a little bit darker overall. But I guess this is just part of the transmitted light vs reflected light thing.

(Eric B, Vic - we suggested setting the luminosity a bit lower in Eye One Match, the excellent software that comes with the Eye One Display 2. Some of our customers find that the suggested luminosity is a little high for their working conditions and find 80-90 cd/m2 (for CRTs) and 100-120 cd/m2 (for LCDs) makes for a better perceptual match with respect to luminance. Luckily the ED2 is very flexible in this regard. The original Eye One Display can also do this - just make sure you download the (free) latest version of Eye One Match from www.gretagmacbeth.com)

Hello Jeremy,

Just thought that i would let you know that I have tried the new
profile on another very difficult subject. A very misty waterfall
over black rocks with green bushes hanging on somehow. With the new
profile the water is white, it was a cyany/green colour before, and
I still have detail in the black rocks. I have maintained the detail
in the highlights at the bottom of the falls, a lot of which were
being blown out before. I certainly think that you have nailed the
colour problems with this printer and ink combination. Many thanks.

I reprinted the colour patches and the difference between yours and both the Atkinson and the Epson prints is quite marked. Yours are much closer to the monitor. Reprinted using your profile and the difference is really something, for the better. So now I have four more to reprint.

just to let you know the paper arrived yesterday and I've run off a few prints - great impact compared to A3+, the SP4000 is brilliant. The profile is excellent, especially in one bluish purple hue I was having difficulty with before. A definite improvement over the standard profile you gave me.

I trust everyone at Image Science had a good break over Christmas.

This is just a quick note to say thank you for the scans which arrived in pristine condition and look great. As you indicated when we spoke in December, the Kodachrome transparencies scanned through the Nikon retain some residual dust but as reference images they are more than satisfactory. I was particularly pleased with the amount of information you were able to draw out of the 50+ year old monochrome negatives I left with you; the amount of detail captured was well above what I was expecting from such old material.

As for the family-related Kodachromes, I copied these over to my iPad and brought them out on Christmas Day, much to the amazement of my father and siblings who suddenly had all sorts of recollections upon seeing the images.

I am currently in the process of putting together a new batch of negatives and transparencies for you to work through and will get these over to you soon.

Just letting you know how impressed I am with the ICC profiles and 
colour neg scans that you did for me a couple of weeks ago.

For the first time in 13 years I am getting outstanding and consistent 
out put from my printer.
As for the 6 X 6 colour neg. scans I am stunned by their quality. The 
two negs that you scanned were taken on Kodak Ektacolor Professional 
Type S film in 1972. That makes them 36 years old. After manipulating 
the images in Aperture 2.1 and printing using the profiles that you 
did, I have produced prints that exceed any versions that I have 
printed using conventional silver based photographic paper.

I received the scans on Monday evening and didn't get much chance yesterday to work with them on a calibrated monitor. I did get to look at them on my laptop and was very happy with the results I saw there. Well done - they are much better scans than I had received from other commercial operators. I will certainly be sending you more film to scan in the near future and for many years to come.

Thanks very much for the work you did. Albeit that my transparencies weren't optimally sharp to begin with, the Imacon scans were significantly better than those produced by the Epson 4990, notably in respect of sharpness and dynamic range. I've just sold the Epson on ebay and if possible will have you handle future scanning. Also I've given your name and number to an artist friend of mine who wants some 35mm slides and documents scanned for an upcomming show, so hopefully you're happy to have the further business!

I now have my PA271W set up and working well (other than doing the calibration with Spectraview once my new i1display pro arrives). Thanks for the speedy order process for both monitor and calibrator (I gather the latter is waiting at the post office for me to collect today).

As promised, here is some feedback re the minidisplay port to display port connector for my Mac Pro. Very simple actually - no problems whatsoever! I just plugged it in and everything worked.

So, so far so good. And I just LOVE my new monitor. Great colour and clarity and a big improvement on my previous seven year-old Apple Cinema Display. But you know all that, so no need for me to say more...

I have only just now, set it up and I have to say, it’s pretty awesome.  

Once you get over the “sheer size” shock, then you get hit by the breathtaking quality of the image.  I don’t think even a gallon of Botox would get the smile off my face!  And I haven’t even calibrated it yet!  Whatever it costs...this monitor is worth it.  Like stepping out of a clapped out Hyundai and getting behind the wheel of a Mercedes!

I ordered an NEC 2490WUXi2 - 24 Inch Monitor from you last Wednesday, and was pleasantly surprised when Kylie contacted me to say it available on Friday for pick up, a couple of days earlier than expected. I also wish to thank Kylie for managing to arrange a courier at such short notice to get it to my office that same afternoon... Excellent service!

.... All I can say is Whow!... Such accurate colours and images displayed take on a new, almost "jump off the page" look about them. I have a 3 monitor setup, with a new $800 Dell 24 inch Ultrasharp (U2410), and an ACER 24 inch (with Samsung S-PVA panel) next to this NEC... And I must say, the NEC just blows the other consumer monitors out of the water!

Anyway, I highly recommend your company and service to anyone and will be purchasing from you again in the future.

Science recently. I gave myself a couple of weeks to form a conscious
opinion before sharing it with you. I'm not sure you need yet another
testimonial in a long list of the ones you already have on your
website, but anyway I want to thank you for all your help.

First of all, I was truly impressed with your website,
imagescience.com.au. I
believe I went through all Australian websites that offer them. Yours
stands out enormously with the amount of professional information and
advice. It helped me to make an informed choice, and I don't regret

Further, I'm especially thankful for your personal help, both via
email and during the demo. It was indeed "unusually high levels of

The monitor was delivered on Friday and so far so good !!  I haven't had the chance to do any calibration (and prob won't for a while as  this weekend has turned out to be quite busy and also want to give some thought to paper I use for  profiles)  but  Images look really  good on the screen and a quick print I have done has come out  close to the screen colours.  The larger screen is great, and a good improvement on the 19inch ,  but more important has been the support I have received from Image Science. So once again I would like to say thanks to both you and Jeremy for your efforts on my behalf. 

I  look forward to dealing with you on non  monitor related matters in future!!

At first I only printed the 255 test target which was alright except for skin
tones the 729 test target did a much better job.
Should have colour corrected my work flow ages ago as it would have

Quickly hooked up the new monitor this evening - looks fantastic, so far not one
dead, stuck or bright pixel, which is amazing given the size of the panel! Can't
wait to really put it through its paces when my new MacPro beast arrives.

I also compared the Eizo to my existing screens - viewed by itself, the Eizo is
without a doubt a beautiful screen, but in a side-by-side comparison it blows

Used the Eye-one unit over the weekend, it was really easy
to use, and worked straight out of the box. The colors (on both
the CRT and the laptop) are significantly different (much warmer, as
expected) than prior to calibration.

The ICC profile installed and went as per instructions on your web-page.
Will try printing with it later.

The CSR is turning out to be an excellent paper for my purposes. The
tonal range certainly raises the eyebrows of the silver gelatin
workers and the surface is more robust for the photography club
judging circuit.

Results from the hp b9180, with it's pigment inks, have been great,
particularly on photo rag where printed images are "real". The pigment
inks are laid down almost as in a painterly image and edges between
light and dark are superb - never thought I'd become a great fan of
matte printing ... but I'm changing my mind!
