Just letting you know how impressed I am with the ICC profiles and 
colour neg scans that you did for me a couple of weeks ago.

For the first time in 13 years I am getting outstanding and consistent 
out put from my printer.
As for the 6 X 6 colour neg. scans I am stunned by their quality. The 
two negs that you scanned were taken on Kodak Ektacolor Professional 
Type S film in 1972. That makes them 36 years old. After manipulating 
the images in Aperture 2.1 and printing using the profiles that you 
did, I have produced prints that exceed any versions that I have 
printed using conventional silver based photographic paper.

Given that the disk negs date from 1984-86, and their dubious treatment
since, the scans have come up amazingly well. I've separated all of the
individual pics successfully.

Albeit that my transparencies weren't optimally sharp to begin with, the Imacon scans were significantly better than those produced by the Epson 4990, notably in respect of sharpness and dynamic range. I've just sold the Epson on ebay and if possible will have you handle future scanning. Also I've given your name and number to an artist friend of mine who wants some 35mm slides and documents scanned for an upcomming show, so hopefully you're happy to have the further business!

I'm sure you've gone home but I just wanted to thank you for sending
those through. After FINALLY getting my two year old to bed, I have
just printed my first photo using one of the profiles through
Lightroom, which Jeremy recommended. And I have to say, after
printing about a dozen off last night trying to get the correct tones
etc, this is the closest to what I am looking at on the monitor...
first go! I still have a lot to learn but hopefully I won't be
wasting too much paper now that I have the profiles.

WOW, I have struggled with my printing for 10 years. Went through the learning process with "Adobe calibration software" and eventually the inconsistancies got to me and I bought a Spyder2 Suite. I am happy with it's performance but had some doubts when I read your notes. My Epson 2400 continued to produce darker, than the monitor, prints even with monitor calibration. It was when I had to print a simple cover for a CD I knew that my printer was way out of calibration. I had read the information on your website sometime ago and bookmarked it. After revisiting the site I printed a target and sent it off to you. The rest is history as they say, $75 well spent. I'm looking forward to buying an EIZO monitor from you later this year. Many thanks for your straight forward easy to follow instructions and the honest informative approach to system calibration.

What a fantastic result you've achieved for us! It's lifted muddy
greenish output to a very close match to the screen display, and it's
even hard to distinguish the quality of colour output on bond vs. coated
paper. (And this is just for unexciting satellite imagery.)

It was only after reading Part 5 of "Stephen Johnson on Digital
Photography" that I was exposed to some of the issues, but I didn't
expect such a big improvement from a custom profile.

downloaded the Ilford profiles for a Canon 4000 printer. I'm already
disappointed.....

Results from the hp b9180, with it's pigment inks, have been great,
particularly on photo rag where printed images are "real". The pigment
inks are laid down almost as in a painterly image and edges between
light and dark are superb - never thought I'd become a great fan of
matte printing ... but I'm changing my mind!

Used the Eye-one unit over the weekend, it was really easy
to use, and worked straight out of the box. The colors (on both
the CRT and the laptop) are significantly different (much warmer, as
expected) than prior to calibration.

The ICC profile installed and went as per instructions on your web-page.
Will try printing with it later.

Unbelievable!!! I have just printed out a sunset photo on the
Hahnemuhle paper, and what I had on the screen is what I got on the

Yes I do have them now, thankyou. I tested them last night using your
test target and one of my own more difficult to print pictures and am
very impressed with the results.

The Huey is doing a good job but these profiles are one of the best
things I've done for my photography.

So I've been using the printer profile for the last couple of weeks now,
and I'm very pleased with the results. I can see the difference in the
prints prior to and after using your profile, and I'm getting excellent
results.

I'm still getting used to the difference in colour gamut & contrast
between the screen & the print but I'm sure I'll acclimatise to this
difference after a little while longer. I'm using the soft proofing
technique you describe on your website, which is a good tool for viewing
the print results prior to producing the actual print too.

So thanks to you both - I've been very happy with the results from the
profile you created for me.

The profile is working perfectly. I am soft proofing in Photoshop and the final print is pretty well spot on. Colours are OK, but the print appears a little bit darker overall. But I guess this is just part of the transmitted light vs reflected light thing.

(Eric B, Vic - we suggested setting the luminosity a bit lower in Eye One Match, the excellent software that comes with the Eye One Display 2. Some of our customers find that the suggested luminosity is a little high for their working conditions and find 80-90 cd/m2 (for CRTs) and 100-120 cd/m2 (for LCDs) makes for a better perceptual match with respect to luminance. Luckily the ED2 is very flexible in this regard. The original Eye One Display can also do this - just make sure you download the (free) latest version of Eye One Match from www.gretagmacbeth.com)

Hello Jeremy,

Just thought that i would let you know that I have tried the new
profile on another very difficult subject. A very misty waterfall
over black rocks with green bushes hanging on somehow. With the new
profile the water is white, it was a cyany/green colour before, and
I still have detail in the black rocks. I have maintained the detail
in the highlights at the bottom of the falls, a lot of which were
being blown out before. I certainly think that you have nailed the
colour problems with this printer and ink combination. Many thanks.

I reprinted the colour patches and the difference between yours and both the Atkinson and the Epson prints is quite marked. Yours are much closer to the monitor. I reprinted the high key pic which had been giving me trouble and that came out pretty close to spot on ..... Out in the bush, lots of green, so I didn't notice the slight green cast. Reprinted using your profile and the difference is really something, for the better. So now I have four more to reprint.

just to let you know the paper arrived yesterday and I've run off a few prints - great impact compared to A3+, the SP4000 is brilliant. The profile is excellent, especially in one bluish purple hue I was having difficulty with before. A definite improvement over the standard profile you gave me.

The CSR is turning out to be an excellent paper for my purposes. The
tonal range certainly raises the eyebrows of the silver gelatin
workers and the surface is more robust for the photography club

Results from the hp b9180, with it's pigment inks, have been great,
particularly on photo rag where printed images are "real". The pigment
inks are laid down almost as in a painterly image and edges between
light and dark are superb - never thought I'd become a great fan of

Yum. Rich as you say. Like a the trifle my mother-in-law makes at
Christmas.
I just used couldn't wait, so I printed my pdi target and a black and
white through Studio (using their Ilford Pearl profile which I usually

Hi Kylie,

The monitor was delivered on Friday and so far so good !!  I haven't had the chance to do any calibration (and prob won't for a while as  this weekend has turned out to be quite busy and also want to give some thought to paper I use for  profiles)  but  Images look really  good on the screen and a quick print I have done has come out  close to the screen colours.  The larger screen is great, and a good improvement on the 19inch ,  but more important has been the support I have received from Image Science. So once again I would like to say thanks to both you and Jeremy for your efforts on my behalf. 

I  look forward to dealing with you on non  monitor related matters in future!!

At first I only printed the 255 test target which was alright except for skin
tones the 729 test target did a much better job.
Should have colour corrected my work flow ages ago as it would have

Quickly hooked up the new monitor this evening - looks fantastic, so far not one
dead, stuck or bright pixel, which is amazing given the size of the panel! Can't
wait to really put it through its paces when my new MacPro beast arrives.

I also compared the Eizo to my existing screens - viewed by itself, the Eizo is
without a doubt a beautiful screen, but in a side-by-side comparison it blows
everything else away.

Thanks very much for the Photo Rag paper. I have only printed a few
images and my wife Tina and I are delighted with the result. I haven't
tried the Silver Rag yet.

I had never seen this paper, or the Epson 3800. I bought them simply
based on what I read - particularly at your most informative site. The
results are as wonderful as I had hoped.

It will be two or more months before I get on top of the whole scanner >
Photoshop > monitor > printer > paper thing.

Used the Eye-one unit over the weekend, it was really easy
to use, and worked straight out of the box. The colors (on both
the CRT and the laptop) are significantly different (much warmer, as
expected) than prior to calibration.

The ICC profile installed and went as per instructions on your web-page.
Will try printing with it later.

Hi Jeremy, thankyou for taking the time to help me sort out my monitor calibrations this morning- it is appreciated more than you will ever know.Obviously if my monitor is out it costs me lots of money & time & work stops till I get it right again.I have never been confident in getting my monitor to its best colour fidelity- loading up some old problem images I was amazed at what I could see that I couldn't see on my CRT monitor with its colour calibrations.

The change in resolution that you mentioned was excellent, Iv'e never seen a screen that sharp, I'm really happy with the monitor & at last really understanding how to calibrate my own monitorv with confidence & being repeatable - this is a really large step forward for me.

I have recently introduced digital media into my teaching of visual 
arts to high school students and have many, many things to learn -

have not yet found how to get superior digital images of the same 
quality I am able to achieve with wet photography, but now have some 
things to try that will get us on the right track.

Just wanted to say a big thanks for your fantastic book notes on the
Digital Fine Print.
I ventured into photography in the late 70's first learning on the job
in NZ and later on the job and at TAFE in Sydney - 13 fantastic years.
Thats a long time ago - obviously way before digital. For many wrong
reasons long ago I stopped taking photos, then 2 years ago I bought
a digital camera. Having studied photography and understanding things
like sensitometry and the dark room, I was suddenly excited.
Things that had taken me days to achieve in the dark room could be done
via photoshop in the matter of minutes. I just needed to learn
how to do it! Finding the data was proving disheartening. Then I
found a link to your site. This is what I needed - fantastically
written
(typo's easily excused).

Wow thanks - I have learnt soo much.
Now, when I first started working in the field, I worked with a guy who
taught me the in's and out's of film/paper types and we would make
our own developers from scratch to achieve a desired product. We
imported unusual papers from germany - some of them were amazing.
The intense velvet blacks.. and tonal range to die for, beautiful paper
surfaces. I thought this was history - but after reading your data I
have
the idea that I'm wrong.

I really want to learn about the papers available today - I would love
to be able to control the whole process (as I once did) and would love
to do a course where you were able to try the various types of papers
available and see and feel the results. Maybe I'm alone in this and
everyone else is up to speed - but I haven't been able to find this
avenue of learning in Sydney. I'm not asking you for a solution, it's
just been
a huge question of mine for the past couple of years.

Yes, I use Pixel
Perfect who do produce great results - even better ones for me since
(thanks to your advise) I bought a calibrator!
Anyway, I'm a big fan and I tell all my photography friends of about
your generosity in providing such valuable knowledge.

Great work on the website, the menus all work on FireFox 2.0.0.3 and MacOS X 10.4.9, and the Digital Fine Print book is awesome.

But what happened in the wavelength section of light, chapter 2? The scale is in reverse! UV should be shortest at around 380nm - 400nm and IR the longest at 700nm. What do you think?

Regardless, it's a fantastic read and I like the style of the writing. Well done.

Really, I meant to email you ages ago but have got caught up with the new job and playing around with the knowledge and skills I gained from the training I day I spent with you a couple of weeks ago. The training was really useful in that it provided me with the underpinning theoretical understanding I needed, as well as some basic skills, to start to explore colour management in a more sophisticated way than I had been doing before. I now have a much better grasp of colour and contrast, and am getting much better results out the printer, even without the profiles being written. As a check, I’ve applied automatic functions (eg auto colour, levels etc) and haven’t liked the results anywhere near as much as what I can produce myself.
