Post Scan Workflow Tips

A basic workflow for your images after scanning would be:

  • Check media to make sure there are no disc errors, and burn a second copy for your archives. (If there are any disc errors - let us know ASAP and we can reburn your scans - they are on our server for a month after your scanning job).
  • Crop the image to the desired crop.
  • Set the black and white points using a curve adjustment layer and make global contrast/colour adjustments if required
(scans of positives will generally be very close to spot on, scans from negatives will almost certainly need a bit more work as negative film is such a variable material).
  • Clean the background layer of any remaining dust and scratches
  • Use layers/layer masks to make localised adjustments if required
  • Save the master file as a PSD or TIFF file and burn twice for safe keeping
  • If you would like someone to do this work for you please contact us and we can do this for you.

To prepare the master file for printing:

  • Load your master file
  • Soft proof for your printing process using an accurate ICC profile (e.g ours for our printing service)
  • Make any final adjustments using the layers
  • Flatten the image
  • Size to the appropriate size and resolution for oyur print process (e.g. ideally 360 PPI for prints at Image Science)
  • Sharpen (be conservative, the Imacon is a naturally very sharp scanner!)
  • Print!
