Nikon 35mm Mounted Film Scanning
All film to be scanned on the Nikon must be mounted 35mm film (i.e. slides). Please note there is a minimum order fee of $20 for Nikon Scans to cover set up time. If your film is not mounted, you will need to use our Premium Scanning Service or buy mounts and mount the film.
Please note we do not accept film mounted in most Reflecta or Matin mounts, as these will not load through the feeder (too many ridges and they're never straight!).
We generally do not accept film in cardboard mounts unless they are in spectacularly good condition.
If mounting your own film make sure you use high quality mounts with completely smooth surfaces - no ridges or little bumps, please, or we will not be able to accept your film! See below for examples.
The Nikon is a good scanner, and offers excellent automatic dust and scratch removal (better in fact than the Imacon). The Nikon is a little inclined to emphasise the grain in images on faster film speeds, and overall is not quite in the class of the Imacon. That said, we have scanned the images for a number of published books solely on the Nikon with excellent results. For prints up to A3 and for most uses, the Nikon really is a good performer - when run properly. Other services using Nikon scanners do not use the sophisticated system of colour management we use.
If you plan to send us any old Kodachrome film:
Please note if you send any Kodachrome film along, you must separate this film from Ektachrome and tell us that it is Kodachrome as otherwise the scanner will assume everything is Ektachrome. If you're not sure, open one of your mounts and check the rebate, it should tell you what time of film it is (if you're still not sure, ask us!).
Automatic dust and scratch removal does not work with Kodachrome, thus some dust and scratch cleaning work will be required.
Mounted Film Scans on the Nikon
- All scans are 16 bit scans
- Digital ICE3 dust and scratch removal (on colour and chromagenic film - see FAQ)
- Please do not go and mount black and white or colour negative film, you will get much better results on the Flextight 949 with negative film
- If your mounts are unusual, or cardboard, glass, damaged, or bent, please call us to discuss
- Get in touch to discuss bulk rates if you have a very large job (= 200 scans plus)
- Minimum job fee of $20

Good Versus Bad Slide Mounts!
Here follows a few examples of slide mounts we can accept, as well as some we can't.
Basically, if the slides do not catch against each other at all when you rub a two together, you should be ok. If in doubt, or you think your mounts will work despite not meeting our criteria, please get in touch for a chat.
Good (we can accept these):

Plastic, clean, smooth mounts.
Bad (we are not able to accept these):

Mounts with obvious bumps and ridges on their surface, cardboard mounts, mounts with labels stuck to them.
