Image Science June 2007 Update
The big news for us this month is that in three weeks we should see the arrival of our first baby! We're super excited now, can't wait to meet the little one and rest assured we'll be popping some pictures up on the site when our 4th member of staff comes along! In charge of gurgles and giggles, slobbers and sleeping, we're expecting big things from her!
Baby Alert : Image Science closing for two weeks - June 25th to July 6th 2007
We're going to shut completely for two weeks so that we can get used to the newest member of our family. Amy is of course going to have slightly longer off than that, but I plan to be back from around the 9th of July, pretty much as normal (with Phil coming in to help me out a lot - Cheers Phil!).
Of course, it's not impossible things may happen earlier - life doesn't always go quite to plan - if that should happen we'll just have to deal with it, and we'll of course put a message on the phone/email letting you know we're shut. Given this situation, we are not taking on any really big jobs in the next few weeks - such as exhibition print runs, or very large urgent scanning jobs. These will have to wait until my return on the 9th of July, but we should get back into the swing of things very quickly after that with any luck.
Scanning of mounted 35mm film now on the Flextight 949!
We've added an excellent new system for the scanning of 35mm mounted film on the Imacon Flextight 949. The maximum resolution is 5000PPI, but if you want to take advantage of the Imacon's legendary quality, and not unmount your film, this is now possible. Please remember to specify which way your film is mounted - i.e. it really helps us if we know which side is the front!
Crane Papers - New Products and Silver Rag price drop
There's three exciting new products from Crane.
Crane Portfolio Rag
This 100% cotton rag paper is a very interesting addition to the market. Containing no optical brighteners at all, it is in fact slightly brighter in white to Hahnemuhle's Photo Rag. It is 300 GSM, very smooth, and has very good blacks and colour (pretty much exactly on par with Photo Rag). I personally still prefer Photo Rag as the surface of Hahnemuhle's paper is full of character, but there is very little in it, and this is the first time in six years that I can honestly say there is a paper that is a serious competitor to Photo Rag.
A4 in stock, other sizes to follow. Get your orders in now!

Crane Maestro Canvas - Gloss and Matte
Crane have two new cotton based inkjet printable canvases on the market. The matte canvas is nice - similar to the truly superb Canson Canvas overall, although with a stronger tooth, making it to my eye slightly less good for photographic work but perhaps more appropriate for art reproduction work.
The gloss canvas is an interesting (if fairly pricey) new option - it prints straight from the box with a bright and bold glossy appearance (you need to use Photo Black ink with this one). No coating or spraying necessary - so if you've been looking for a gloss canvas option with great print quality but with less mucking around, you now have a great way to achieve this!
Both available in rolls only, we're taking orders now.

Silver Rag Price Drop
Silver Rag rolls have dropped significantly in price recently - the paper remains the best of all the new fibre based papers to my eye - unparalleled for black and white work in particular.

Photo Rag Pearl!
This much anticipated new paper is shortly to arrive - we've had initial samples through (if you're very keen send me an email to confirm we still have some samples, and then we'll ask you to send a stamped, self-addressed A4 envelope and I'll send you a sample back!). We're taking orders now, and anticipate arrival in about 4-5 weeks (probably soon after we're back from our break).
This paper is Hahnemuhle's answer to Crane Silver Rag and from what we've seen so far is very similar - 100% cotton, no optical brighteners, semi-gloss surface and very very deep blacks. The paper itself is softer, with a more luxurious feel, and print quality/surface seems very similar. A more extensive report will follow once I've had a bit more time to play with it!

Profile notes now available for Photoshop Elements users
I was recently told that Photoshop Elements outsells the full version of Photoshop by a factor of 40 to 1! It's perfectly possible to use ICC profiles with Photoshop elements to achieve the same superb quality printing you can achieve with the full version of Photoshop.
To this end, I have now written some notes on how to print the profile targets from Elements (see Elements example at the bottom), and how to use ICC profiles in Photoshop Elements once you have them.
If you're not yet a user of custom ICC profiles, then you're really missing out on the enormous print quality benefits that are achievable for very little investment in time and money - most of our clients agree that no other single thing has helped them improve their photographic output as much as custom profiles.
Image Science Community Corner
Three exhibitions and a new online shop from our clients this time. We've been involved with all of these works at one point or other - usually on the scanning and/or printing side of things.

Our new client Tamara Maguire has an Etsy Shop featuring her lovely graphic illustrations - we've actually just bought three of these to decorate our baby's room! And they look great!
It's not often you can get really nice original works for prices like this - head on over and support a talented local artist! By the way if you're into crafts, Etsy is a fantastic place to browse - several of our clients have shops there and it's a great place to find some beautiful bargains!

Updating our links page
Our 'Links' page was so out of date that I have temporarily removed it from the website. I intend to bring it back soon, better than ever. If you'd like your site to be linked by ours, and you're an Image Science client, we're happy to help.
With well over 8000 visitors a month, Image Science gets a lot of traffic from the sort of people you probably want seeing your work - people really interested in images and image making - from all over the world! And not just photographers - we work with all sorts of artists, architects, designers...you name it - really anyone with an interest in visual arts. This includes plenty of people actively buying prints!
If you do want a link on our site, please send:
- your name
- your website address
- a small gif/jpg of your logo if you have one
- a single line description of your work (which we may edit to fit our requirements if necessary)
That's it!
Cheers, hope life is treating you very well indeed, and hope to see you soon,
Jeremy and Amy Daalder
