Image Science January 2007 Update
Well, we're back and refreshed after our very enjoyable trip to Lord Howe island, and of course a lovely Christmas break with both Amy's family here in Victoria, and mine in Adelaide.
2007 will be a big year for us, in many ways, and we've got lots of exciting plans for Image Science this year. The most immediate will be the addition of proper online sales shortly. I'll be developing this myself from scratch, so it will certainly take a month or two to get it all running, but expect to see it in the not too distant future. Initially, we will offer a fairly basic 'submit your order' type page (with excellent security of course), but over time we plan to add account management, order histories and all that sort of thing, to make things as efficient as possible for you. Of course, we still ultimately prefer a hands on face to face approach with our clients/colleagues/friends - personal service and quality are the two most important elements of our business and we're very aware of that - it's what separates us from all the megastores out there.
This update is just a quickie to get the ball rolling for the new year. Apart from the normal news snippets, we've got a new section down the bottom - the Image Science Community. It's a bit of cross promotional goodness and features new exhibitions, products and so forth from our clients. If you've got something interesting you'd like to get into this section, just drop us a line! We're also always looking for interesting new links to client's web sites (especially if you link back to us) - so if you have a web site let us know!
Hahnemuhle Products Update
The first, and worst, news is that prices have now gone up. We still have quite a lot of stock of popular lines at the old prices, but once that is sold out, the new prices will apply. So now is definitely the time to order up any of your favourites because they'll never be this cheap again!
Many popular lines have stayed at almost the same price, but some other products are noticeably more expensive now. This is the first price rise in 5 years, so it's not all that surprising. We're also no longer able to put our pricing on our web pages, because we're still officially selling the products too cheaply and Hahnemuhle Europe don't want their European resellers seeing our prices which are amongst the lowest in the world. Thus, we've attached our new price list to this message, and if you ever need another copy after this, you'll need to get in touch and request one. Once we have online sales implemented, you'll be able to see the pricing live on the site, just by adding any product to your basket.

Albums/Folios - OK, in the last newsletter we mentioned the coloured albums were being discontinued in favour of new leather albums. That was actually incorrect, there are in fact still going to be the coloured albums, but they have been updated (and have new product codes, hence the confusion). They now come with interleaf sheets, and pre-scored pages (so they fold open flatter than ever before!). They have also gone up substantially in price, but we have several of the 2006 versions in stock still, so grab them while you can because was can't order any more at these prices.

New Leather Folios - initially only available in A4,these should be with us very soon and we're taking orders now. They're obviously more expensive, but they're also a cut above anything else available on the market - very classy. These contain 20 sheets of the new Photo Rag Duo 274 gsm (see below) and interleaf sheets.

Photo Rag Duo - The 196 and 316 weights of this product have both been discontinued in favour of a new 276 gsm weight. We've got a few packets of A4/A3/A3+ remaining, so snap them up now if you need some! We haven't yet got pricing for the new stuff but it won't be long.

Photo Rag Pearl - After some confusion with Hahnemuhle, this exciting new product has been confirmed as arriving in Australia around April/May. Feel free to send us an email to register your interest, we'll get some as soon as it comes into the country of course!
Inkjet Coatings - Exciting new option (especially suited to canvas!)
We get asked all the time, particularly by people printing on canvas, about protective coatings. Until now we've been recommending the Liquitex products but there's now a better option available - ECO PrintShield. This is a new water based version of the superlative PremierArt PrintShield. It's much more environmentally friendly, and because it is not solvent based you don't have to worry about ventilation quite so much when using it.
We're told this is the only product endorsed by Epson and HP, and has been independently tested by Wilhelm Imaging.
It's especially well suited to canvas, and comes in 3 different finishes - Gloss, Matte and Satin. Even better, you can mix the three to get exactly the finish you are after. There is a sample kit available ($120, click here for details ) which has trial bottles of the three different coatings, along with a roller and a tray for easy application.

Given it is water based, we can send this one all over the country without worrying about special couriers.

The New Image Science Community Notice Board!
(Exhibitions, Products, and Interesting Things from Image Science Clients!)
We're lucky to have many really nice clients, and over the years we've developed excellent working relationships, indeed friendships, with many of our clients. Whenever possible, we like to work with our clients in new and interesting ways. This is because we believe that community in an important part of creative life - indeed life as a whole!
Lately, a number of our clients have begun opening galleries, creating products and having exhibitions. To show our support, we'd love to encourage you to let us know about these things (especially if we've been involved in any way), so that we in turn can pass on the information to other members of the Image Science community (which is actually quite large these days!). It's all in aid of cross promotional goodness and general creative community support, and a nice chance to catch up on what people are doing with all these exciting new materials and techniques.
To kick off, here are a few interesting items that have cropped up so far this year:
- Shara Henderson : Portraits - exhibition at The Autopsy - Shara has won numerous prestigious prizes for her portraits including (but not limited to) the National Portrait Prize (2005) from the National Portrait Gallery in London, so this will definitely be an exhibition worth looking out for! The exhibition is of portraits from the last 3 years. We do a lot of scanning for Shara and she's talented and friendly so go along and support her! Details are on the linked page.
- Valentine's Cards from Cat MacInnes - Cat has just released a lovely range of cards just in time for Valentine's day. Available in single cards or packs of 10 (if you really want to share the love!), I particularly like these because they're not all sugary and saccharine like the normal stuff you see. And no matter how much of a manufactured event Valentine's day might be, it's impossible to tell your loved one how special they are too often!

Cat's Web Page

- Lara, another of our really talented clients, and an excellent all round designer, is always coming up with new and crafty ways to use materials. She has a great blog to read, along with lots of interesting pictures - Lara's Blog , Lara's Web Page . She is particularly good at patterns, obviously has a really creative mind, and I always enjoy reading her blog (it is, in fact, the only blog I actually read on a regular basis!). Lara also happens to live around the corner, which makes her extra good, because North Melbourne is, obviously, the coolest suburb in Melbourne. Perhaps even the world!
- If you'd like to be featured in this section in a future newsletter, just send us an email with what you're doing. We don't promise to put just anything in, but we're very flexible and so long as we think it will hold interest for a good proportion of our clients we'll be very happy to work with you! In the meantime, have fun creating things!
That's It!
That's it for this time - as I said just a quickie to kick off the new year. More news soon!
Cheers, and hope life is treating you well, and hope to see you soon,
Jeremy and Amy Daalder
