Hahnemuhle Photo Rag
Hahnemuhle Photo Rag has a very good combination of gamut and d-max with both dye and pigment inks. It's everything you want in a fine art matte paper - acid free, cotton rag, rigid and satisfyingly thick at 308 g/m2 (its also available in other weights, and double sided). It's surface is relatively smooth, not 100% perfectly smooth like a hot pressed paper but smooth enough that it's very, very slight texture does not interfere with image detail. It is a little more expensive than some papers, but in this case you certainly get what you pay for - a paper of superb quality capable of producing excellent photographic results that will outlast us all, when combined with the latest pigment inksets such as the Epson Ultrachrome inks.
If you're new to fine art matte papers, or papers other than the standard Epson range, this is a great place to start. We use it for all our popular printing services.
This paper is available in all sorts of weights and sizes, and in double sided versions.
Key features
- 100% Cotton Rag paper (designed to last several centuries)
- 308 gsm (also available in 188 and double sided)
- Bright white, unbleached
- Acid Free
- Incredible gamut and d-max!
- Excellent image sharpness
- Good water resistance (we're told - still don't suggest you mix prints and water though!)
- You can download the information sheet for the paper by clicking here
- If using an Ultrachrome inkset - use the Matte Black ink with this paper for the deepest blacks. Also compatible with the Photo Black as well, of course.
NB do NOT use 'Watercolour Radiant White' as the paper type in the Epson driver - use Enhanced Matte/Heavyweight Matte/Archival Matte, and a custom profile, for best results (WCRW lays down too much ink and impairs shadow detail).

Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin
Very similar to the original Photo Rag, this paper has an unusual coating that takes on a sheen when printed on. It works paricularly well with toned black and white images (can take on an appearance similar to palladium prints), but overall I'm not sold on it for general printing. It's the only cotton rag paper with a semi-gloss type finish that accepts the matte black ink on the market though, so it's definitely useful in some cases.

Hahnemuhle Leather Digital Folios
Hahnemuhle's premium inkjet printable folios. They are bound in elegant black leather and feature heavier weight paper than the standard Hahne folios. The paper is 276 gsm weight Photo Rag Duo (ie printable on both sides - thus there are 40 printable surfaces).
All pages are pre-scored and the folios come with interleaf sheets. They are quite beautiful, and very ease to use and assemble.
These albums are a cut above anything else available on the market and a perfect for higher end work - your own folio, wedding albums, that sort of thing.

Hahnemuhle Digital Folios
Each folio contains 20 sheets of A4 or A3 sized double sided Natural Art 256 gsm paper (basically just another weight of Photo Rag - a Photo Rag profile works perfectly with this, so no need to re-profile). The pages are pre-holed for easy binding into the cover (with the included Chicago screws). Thus you get 40 printable surfaces in each folio! The covers are bound all the way to the edge, meaning neat, robust edges that won't split easily.
The Chicago screw system is very easy to use and is hidden by flaps, so the final result is an easy to assemble professional level folio book.
If using an Ultrachrome inkset - use the Matte Black ink with this paper for the very deepest blacks. Also compatible with the Photo Black as well, of course.
Albums come complete with interleaf sheets (22) and pages are pre-scored (20) so the folios open up flatter than ever before!
NOTE: The new refill packs are complete with 40 sheets Natural Art Duo + 44 Interleaf Sheets and 4 Extension Screws. Also note the blue and red albums pictured above are no longer available - the current choices are black or silver.

Hahnemuhle Baryta
100% Alpha-Cellulose, ultra-smooth, high gloss.
FineArt Baryta 325 is a brilliant white, high gloss paper that sets the benchmark for high colour depth, large colour gamut and image definition. This paper gives the “wow” factor particularly to black and white prints with an extremely high dmax and the finest grey tones. It is a unique experience to touch and feel the ultra smooth surface. Using barium sulphate in the premium inkjet coating ensures the typical gloss that makes this paper a genuine replacement for traditional Baryta papers from analogue laboratories.
Key Features:
- 325 gsm
- Gloss surface, looks like a traditional fibre based darkroom paper!
- Brightness: >100 (contains optical brighteners)
- If using an Ultrachrome inkset - use the Photo Black ink with this paper
- Capable of very punchy and saturated results!

Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl
This paper is Hahnemuhle's answer to Crane Silver Rag. It's 100% high grade alpha cellulose and has a light semi-gloss finish that is quite similar to a traditional fibre based paper. Where Crane have gone for a conservative approach with respect to conservation issues (ie no optical brigteners), Hahnemuhle have gone for an approach that favours maximum contrast range, meaning this paper offers the maximum in punch and saturation. I wrote extensively on these new papers in our June 2006 newsletter.
Key Features:
- 285 gsm
- Semi-gloss surface, looks like a traditional fibre based darkroom paper!
- pH: 7.9-8.5
- Brightness: >100 (contains optical brighteners)
- 100% alpha-cellulose
- Claimed dmax: 2.88 - I believe this figure is achieved once the print is sprayed with a special new spray - other testers report an unsprayed d-max of around 2.2 - very similar to Crane Silver Rag visually, anyway. Basically, very dark inky blacks that are beyond anything achievable in a traditional darkroom!
- If using an Ultrachrome inkset - use the Photo Black ink with this paper
- Capable of very punchy and saturated results!

Hahnemuhle Torchon
Hahnemuhle Torchon is the non-smooth equivalent of Hahnemeuhle Photo Rag with a classic water colour textured surface. A Torchon paper is one that is quite rigid and has an irregular texture. This paper is perfect for fine-art applications such as card making, and suits prints particularily well that rely on mood rather than fine details (think foggy morning shots, forest scenes, that sort of thing). The coating of Torchon is very similar to that of Photo Rag and a single custom profile for one of these papers will be adequate for most people for both papers. Perfect for fine-art cards, this paper can add a real feel of quality to your work.
If you're new to textured matte papers, or papers other than the standard Epson range, this is a great place to start if you're looking for a real fine art, hand made feel. This paper is also excellent for the reproduction of art works, like watercolours and pastels. Great for producing limited edtions (or limited edition certificates!).
Key features
- Cotton Rag paper (designed to last several centuries)
- Watercolour irregular texture (medium level of texture)
- 285 gsm
- Bright white, unbleached
- Acid Free
- Fantastic gamut and d-max
- Good water resistance (we're told - still don't suggest you mix prints and water though!)
- You can download the information sheet for the paper by clicking here
- If using an Ultrachrome inkset - use the Matte Black ink with this paper for the deepest blacks. Also compatible with the Photo Black as well, of course.
NB do NOT use 'Watercolour Radiant White' as the paper type in the Epson driver - use Enhanced Matte/Heavyweight Matte/Archival Matte, and a custom profile, for best results (WCRW lays down too much ink and impairs shadow detail).

Hahnemuhle Authenticity Certificates
The Hahnemühle Certificate of Authenticity is designed to protect the security and exclusivity of your limited edition art works and reproductions, and reduce the risk of forgery. Each certificate has a serialized numerical hologram already affixed to the certificate. The certificate can then have your customised design and wording printed onto it, eg: description of art work, publisher, artist, edition number and date, through inkjet, laser, thermal transfer or offset litho printing.
An identical numerically serialized hologram is also provided, to be fixed directly to the art work itself, usually on the reverse image side. This combination assures that the Certificate of Authenticity relates directly to that particular piece of artwork. The certificates are manufactured to the strict standards and regulations of Europay and Clearstream, the world leaders in forgery resistant printing. The forgery resistant security characteristics found in this system are both visible and invisible in the forms of serial number, Guilloche with relief, rainbow-pressure, watermarks and a special UV signature.
The certificates and hologram systems are available in packs of 100 sequenced numbers. Hahnemuhle also keep an additional record at their offices for added security.
More information, printing templates, and images available here.
While not cheap, they are exceedingly classy and are just the sort of thing to use if you're hoping to command premium prices for your work. They show you take editioning seriously and are willing to back it up with formal documentation, and to many buyers of photography that is a very important thing.
